God Is Ever Present
Joann Townsend of Spokane, WA USA
Let my words be preached to the bruised and brokenhearted as well as those who are enmeshed in sin, longing to repent and follow me. Let the truths of my gospel be proclaimed as widely and as far as the dedication of the Saints, especially through the exercise of their temporal stewardship, will allow. My Spirit is reaching out to numerous souls even now and there are many who will respond if you, my people, will ear affirmative testimony of my love and my desires for all to come unto me. -Doctrine and Covenants 153:9a, b
In my job as a nurse, I was in an on-call position. I would let the hospital staffing office know which days I was available to work if needed. Being on call also meant I could be called in at a moment’s notice if someone called in ill or there were more patients to care for. I worked in maternity, and our patient population numbers could change from hour to hour. The phone call was usually at 5:00 a.m., and I had only seconds to decide if I could help. If I said yes, all of my plans that day would have to be put aside. My fellow nurses teased me that they never knew when I would show up. There was no day-to-day routine that I could rely on in my work life. Most days had the potential to be a workday. It was unsettling at times, and I longed for regular hours.
The one constant blessing I could depend on was my relationship with God. He was present at a moment’s notice. I could reach God day, evening, or night. There was no sign saying, “Back at 1:00 p.m.” or “I can’t talk to you today.” I did not have to wonder if God was listening to my prayer at 3:00 a.m. What a comfort it was for me to know that God is ever-present-my on-call help in times of need 24/7.
“In God’s hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of every human being” (Job 12:10).
All That Lives
Sit quietly and sense God’s presence flowing through the trees and all creation. Offer a prayer of gratitude for your connection to all that lives. Ask for grace to discern and carry out one small act of justice or healing that creates greater wholeness for the plants, animals, trees, waters, air, and land that are part of the community of creation.
