Hey! What about That Lady?
Samantha Bassett of Greenwood, NY, USA
So now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord your God and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being. -Deuteronomy 10:12-13
On our way to town on a Saturday morning I heard God’s voice. It sounded just like my 5-year-old son Drew to me. I didn’t realize it was God until I went to bed that night and was thinking about our day.
We were headed to town early so we could do other errands before our haircuts when Drew said, “Hey! What about that lady?”
“I forgot, honey. We already went by. Maybe next time.”
“No, mommy, you said we would go see if she wanted to go with us.”
“You’re right.”
We turned around and went to see her. Now, I had seen this person once before. I wasn’t not sure she would even know who I was, or if she would want to go with us. But I told Drew we might go, and I knew she needed some friends.
I went to the door and knocked. When she opened the door, she immediately invited us in. I introduced ourselves and told her we were wondering if she would like to ride to town with us. She wasn’t able to go, but Drew and I stayed to visit for almost two hours. Time flew by!
I think I could have sat and visited with her all day. When we finally had to leave so we would make our appointment in time, she thanked us for visiting and said we made her day. I told her we would be back and left my phone number so she could give me a call if she wanted a ride to church.
I’m so glad I listened to the voice that brought such a blessing to her and to me! I’m already planning another trip to see her.
How is God talking to you today?
Prayer Phrase
“… the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4).
Spiritual Practice
Breathing God’s Compassion
Pay attention to your breathing and let it become calmer and deeper as you focus on God’s presence. Ask God to breathe in you. Imagine each breath carrying the light of God into your lungs, bloodstream, and every cell in your body until God’s Spirit fills you. Now imagine breathing out God’s compassion and grace each time you exhale, especially into places and situations in need of loving care. Give thanks to the Spirit, source of every breath, source of life.
