The Cause Is Sure…I Am Sure
By Ramona Seeley of Leeton, MO, USA

The Spirit of the One you follow is the spirit of love and peace. That Spirit seeks to abide in the hearts of those who would embrace its call and live its message. The path will not always be easy, the choices will not always be clear, but the cause is sure and the Spirit will bear witness to the truth, and those who live the truth will know the hope and the joy of discipleship in the community of Christ. Amen. —Doctrine and Covenants 161:7

I was baptized when I was 10 years old. There was no font in our little white church, so baptisms took place only in the summer months in a local river or pond. Finally, after continually asking my parents, other children were ready, and the pastor arranged for the sacrament of baptism by water.

We went to a gravel quarry that was full of water. The mothers decided to have the girls wear bathing caps so their hair would not be wet for the confirmation service to follow. When my turn came, they handed me the cap, but I looked at my mother and set it aside. She understood.

My parents always taught me that baptism would wash away my sins, and at my young age my understanding was literal. I wanted to make sure all my sins would wash away and none would be left covered up—not even the hairs on my head. I was sure in my commitment to be clean before the Lord.

In my journey today I still want to be clean before the Lord in body, mind, and spirit—a daily practice of wholeness. I want to embrace my call to discipleship and celebrate God’s spirit in my heart.

Prayer for Peace

Holy Spirit, continue in our hearts. With each new breath, we would renew our commitment to you. With each sunrise, may we renew our commitment to peace.

Spiritual Practice: Embodying God’s Shalom

Find a way to express and embody God’s shalom. Begin by prayerfully listening to your longing for peace and wholeness. Become silent and imagine you can hear the groaning of the Earth’s people, nations, and creatures. Prayerfully open yourself to God’s yearning for peace and the divine vision of shalom.

Peace Covenant

Today, God, I will take time to celebrate your Spirit in my life.
