Qualified to Pray?
Grace Andrews of Independence, MO, USA

Come, learn of the Meek and Lowly, Come, sit at the Master’s feet;
No place in the world so holy, No place in the world so sweet;
His lessons are plain and simple, A balm to the wounded breast;
He maketh our burden lighter, And giveth His children rest. -Fanny Crosby, Zion’s Praises 7

When I was 15 years old the evangelist of our district was available to give blessings, so I chose to prepare to receive that ministry. In the sacrament of blessing I was counseled in various ways to “…pray often. Go to God early in the morning. Go to God at noontime or thereabouts, and before you lay your body down to sleep in the night, as well as other times when you feel anxious or perplexed. Go to God and God will bless you.”

This counsel became a part of me. I go to God first thing in the morning. At mealtime I never take a bite before offering a prayer of thanksgiving and praise, as well as sharing other things on my heart. And, before lying down to rest at night, God is the last one to whom I talk.

Recently we vacationed in a distant city, in a lovely condo owned by our son. We invited a friend to share that time and space with us. On the first day we took turns praying at meals, as was our custom. Later, I asked our friend if she would like to give thanks before a meal. I was stunned to hear her quietly say, “I don\’t know if I’m qualified.” My husband quickly responded, “We are all qualified to pray.” She hesitated and then offered a prayer of blessing for the food.

We wondered later, “Why would anyone not feel they could go to God in prayer in any circumstance?” Was it because my husband and I are priesthood members and she is not? Was it because she did not receive gentle guidance about such things in her childhood? Was it because she did not feel worthy to pray aloud? Whatever the reason, we are reminded in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face…I will hear them …”
