Making a Difference
Betty Williams of Mission, British Columbia, Canada
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:4-7
The Mission Prayer begins with the words, “God where will your Spirit lead me today? Help me be fully awake and ready to respond.” Where is God leading you and me? What are the needs which God is bringing to our attention?
Human trafficking is at epidemic proportions. Recently a flight attendant noticed a young teen girl with an older man. They did not appear to be doing well together. The attendant noted that something was not right. She told the girl to go to the front restroom where she had placed a paper and pencil. On the paper she had written, “If you are in trouble and need help, please write it here.” The teen wrote that she was in trouble and the man was taking her away. The attendant let the pilot know, and the man was arrested. The teen’s pathway was changed because someone was “fully awake and ready to respond.”
The rest of the Mission Prayer says, “Grant me courage to risk something new and become a blessing of your love and peace.” We can all have a positive effect on the pathways of our children, teens, and young adults when we are fully awake and willing to receive the courage that God can give us to make a difference.
Trafficking is going on all around us. Can you be one who makes a difference by addressing that societal epidemic? If not, to what need is God calling you to respond? How will you be a blessing of God’s love and peace today?
Wherever I am, God is here.
Breathe deeply and prayerfully consider the story you have just read. What is the Spirit’s invitation to you in these words? What does it look like to wake up to God’s presence in this moment?
