Belonging
Katie Harmon-McLaughlin of Sacramento, CA, USA

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. -Romans 8:22-25

I am here
Present
Available,
In the path of
Spirit outpouring
Unimpeded

And that is enough for now.

Already I feel my heart
Opening
Softening
Expanding
Into the unfolding day

I am here
Immersed in sounds of creation
Listening for the Sacred
In my own creature Soul.

Here I feel belonging
With the towering maple
Draped in an ivy dress

And the birds
Who chatter and sing
And even the bee
Hovering close enough to
The skin of my arm
That I feel the
Wind from tiny wings
Focusing my whole attention
In THIS moment
As I flinch for fear
Of what may sting

I am here
Remembering how-
Everywhere I am
And with every person
And in all creation
With what is beautiful
And what is frightening-
I need to say and repeat
I belong.
I belong.
I belong.

Prayer Phrase

I am about to do a new thing, now it springs forth… (Isaiah 43:19).

Spiritual Practice

A New Thing

Breathe deeply and listen within. Where is the Spirit doing a new thing in you? How do you feel about the new thing that might be emerging? Are you excited, resistant, fearful, hopeful? Take whatever you are experiencing to prayer. Breathe deeply and listen around you. Where is the Spirit doing a new thing in your community? Pay attention to how it feels to discern the Spirit’s activity and presence within and around you.
