Stand for Justice
Tanoh Assoi, president of seventy

And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” -Luke 18:1-8

Jesus wants us to pray tirelessly in order to obtain the favor of the Lord. He tells the parable of the unrighteous judge and a widow who was a vulnerable person without power. Her social status was unenviable in the Jewish society of the time of Jesus. She comes before an unrighteous judge, a person of power who does not have the fear of God, to make her case heard. Showing courage, boldness, and insistence, she confronts the judge so that justice may be given to her. She finally obtained justice from the unrighteous judge. Perseverance and tenacity in prayer are essential.

As much as the widow annoys the unrighteous judge, bends him, and obtains satisfaction, our prayer will find in the heart of God a fair and favorable welcome if we are constant and persevering, for God is righteous and faithful.

When our cause is right, we will get a favorable response from God, even in difficult circumstances as in the case of the widow. To stand up and act in the face of injustice is a duty.

God challenges us about the injustices we see around us. Injustice diminishes the worth of all persons. Let’s act to end it! As much the insistent prayer will find a favorable echo with God, righteousness shall eventually triumph if we are constant and consistent because God makes the righteous causes triumph and cannot bear the oppression. With courage and perseverance, but also a great deal of boldness, let us fight against injustice of all kinds, of which the vulnerable people are victims. The God of justice will be with us.

Prayer Phrase

Let gratitude show you the way (Doctrine and Covenants Section 165:2b).

Spiritual Practice

Gratitude

Gratitude is an important spiritual practice that invites us to see all of life as a gift. We give thanks for our breath, the food we eat, people we love, and all that we have that truly matters. We remember that we are connected and sustained by a web of relationships with creation, God, and other people. Take time each day this month to practice giving thanks and to consider-for what am I most grateful?
