Seeing All Sides
R.L. Morgan (July 28, 1949)
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” -Proverbs 19:18
Once at a reunion when the tents were being put, a man told a couple of youngsters to hold a rope. We were delighted to help and pulling that rope as tight as we could and taking it twice around a tree, we held on for dear life. In fact, we did such a good job that the tent was pulled out of line, and all the kid-power they could muster on the other side of it could not pull that tent straight until finally someone came around and had us ease up.
We were doing church work, doing just what someone in authority told us to do, and doing it with might and main. But we were doing it wrong. We were breaking a law of tent raising, and all our good intentions could never put the tent up. And so God’s reunion waited until everyone there complied with the laws. That tent was for the handcraft workshop for the youngsters, and I can remember yet the enjoyment it contained during that reunion.
How often people pull and struggle and fail and decide it is a hard, bitter world in which there is no God, and thus are discouraged into turning away from what they might have. Our problems rarely have so simple a solution as putting up the tent, but we can pray and not faint. We can see the entire picture instead of one side only, and we can have the joys that are in a life well built.
The Spirit is revealed in our sacred stories.
Sharing sacred story is a meaningful way to express and remember God’s activity among us. How have you been transformed by the words and stories of others? What stories do you feel called to share from your own sacred history?
This month we are celebrating 70 years of Daily Bread. Each day we will be sharing Daily Bread stories from throughout the decades. You will notice that these stories reflect the language and theology of the time they were written. Our hope is that this act of sacred remembering will bless us with awareness of God’s movement throughout time and a renewed sense of God’s presence with us now! Consider joining this rich tradition of sacred story sharing by submitting your story here: https://www.CofChrist.org/daily-bread-writers-guide
