For Greater Life

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; -Psalm 24:1
A few of us friends started out on a picnic just at dusk. We went far back from the highway until we came to a little creek. The rock formations were beautiful. We built our fire in between the rocks and climbed up the cliff to get a good view of the scene below. The silhouette of a friend, the outline of the creek, and the rich darkness of trees were illuminated by the warm red glow of the fire. The air was clean and cool. And when we looked up we saw hosts of stars thick in the sky. Crickets, locusts, and bullfrogs made up our orchestra. Fresh fruits from the tree, roasted wieners and buns, and toasted marshmallows were our feast. What greater wealth could there be anywhere? We were rich.
Forgotten were the loud voices, the hum of machinery, the tedium of the day’s toil. Forgotten were weary minds and aching muscles and tired feet. New life and love surged fresh within us. “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God’s creation had fulfilled “He restoreth my soul.”
As we left our campfire we were sorry we had not oftener taken Christ at his word to receive greater power and life.
This month we are celebrating 70 years of Daily Bread. Each day we will be sharing Daily Bread stories from throughout the decades. You will notice that these stories reflect the language and theology of the time they were written. Our hope is that this act of sacred remembering will bless us with awareness of God’s movement throughout time and a renewed sense of God’s presence with us now! Consider joining this rich tradition of sacred story sharing by submitting your story here: https://www.CofChrist.org/daily-bread-writers-guide
The Spirit is revealed in our sacred stories.
Sharing sacred story is a meaningful way to express and remember God’s activity among us. How have you been transformed by the words and stories of others? What stories do you feel called to share from your own sacred history?
