The Labyrinth
Carole Heathers of Stratford, Ontario, Canada
The Spirit of the One you follow is the spirit of love and peace. That Spirit seeks to abide in the hearts of those who would embrace its call and live its message. The path will not always be easy, the choices will not always be clear, but the cause is sure and the Spirit will bear witness to the truth, and those how live the truth will know the hope and the joy of discipleship in the community of Christ. Amen. -Doctrine and Covenants 161:7
We have a labyrinth at our Ziontario campgrounds. The seven circles are cut into the grasses and wild flowers of a field. I find peace and encouragement as I walk along the path with the beautiful shoulder-height border of God’s creation. Most of the circles are unseen because of the height of the grasses and flowers. The flowers change through the summer. Today the colors are yellow, purple, and white. As I start my journey, I ask to be open and aware of the presence of the holy. Sometimes my mind is so full that it takes me a few circles before I begin to be calm and centered. That’s when I feel God bathing me in unconditional love.
What an amazing feeling! Answers and inspiration come. I am aware in a heightened way of the presence of the holy in everything I see, hear, smell, or touch. I see the Creator in the beautiful butterflies, I hear God in the buzzing of the bees and the sound of insects. One day a little snake crossed my path as he made his way across the labyrinth…we met each other a few times as I walked the circles. Neither of us was frightened of the other. We were all part of the creation of God.
I would like my life to be a labyrinth experience. Each day I would see the holy in everything I encounter and would not fear those who are different from me, but would see them as God does…part of God’s beloved creation.
