Spectacular: Keep on Keeping on

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. —Philippians 4:8–9 NRSV
A great event sponsored by Community of Christ in late July is SPECTACULAR at Graceland University. I have seen through the years how it changes, enlivens, and helps our youth become aware and connected with God through the Holy Spirit. Often the youth come wondering what SPEC is all about, how they will fit in. Will they like it, or will it be too “churchy”?
Then, astoundingly, they become an involved part of the adventure. They feel accepted and find it is a great event in which to become involved. I have witnessed personally the positive changes that have taken place in youth and adults as the spectacular week evolves.
I, too, have made positive changes in my life because of my association with the youth and the adults involved with SPECTACULAR. I have found the youth to be open, enthusiastic, respectful, forgiving, loving, and seeking to understand something about this God we worship.
I am a huge fan of SPECTACULAR. May we keep doing this “pleasing, commendable, and worthy of praise” event. May we do whatever it takes to keep on doing it for the future disciples of Christ’s mission.
Prayer for Peace
Help us, God, to continue “whatever is honorable, just, and pure” —whatever helps people connect with each other and with you.
Spiritual Practice: Develop Disciples to Serve
As disciples of Jesus Christ, our call is to respond to people and their needs. Pray about using your skills to help the mission of the community. As you feel affirmed, thank God for the opportunity to be a responding, serving disciple while you move on your outward journey.
