Faith amid Fog
By Grace Andrews of Independence, MO, USA
For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not de-part from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has com-passion on you. —Isaiah 54:10 NRSV
After moving to Missouri many years ago we smiled when the morning news predicted “dense fog.” Looking out our windows we could see hundreds of feet away. We had accustomed ourselves to central California where, during winter months, “dense fog” meant something else. It was similar to whiteouts caused by snowstorms. Our habit, which has continued to this day, was praying before setting out on any trip.
Going home one day, I lost track of the white line down the middle of the road and could barely see the hood ornament on my car. I was vaguely aware of other cars around me turning off in different directions. I remember praying fervently that God would help me get home safely. Suddenly a large truck loomed up in front of me. Its strong back lights were like beacons as I followed a safe distance behind. Afraid I would lose sight of it, I kept my eyes firmly fixed on that truck.
The truck driver turned in all the right places. I remember being thankful that he chose my route and chose that time. Straining my eyes, I realized unbelievably he had turned onto our quiet, little street. Soon I saw the outline of our house. The truck disappeared down the street into the dense fog as I pulled in our driveway. I bowed my head and thanked God with all my heart for giving me a light to lead me home. If not for that truck, I may have ended my trip in a ditch—not at my intended destination. Many paths and roads lead away from Christ, but if we faithfully keep our eyes fixed on him, he will lead us safely where we need to be.
Prayer for Peace
Ever-present God, if we look closely, we find you are always with us. If we listen carefully, we will follow your loving voice. Open our hearts to feel your compassion and bring others to the peace of Jesus.
Spiritual Practice: Honoring God’s Call in My Life
Reflect on God’s call in your life. Begin by prayerfully asking to recall particular moments when you have experienced God’s presence and invitation to share your gifts. When has God seemed most real in your life? When have you felt disconnected or resistant to God’s call? Reflect on what you did or might do to become reconnected to God. Write in your journal or reflect on how you can develop and share your gifts with others.
Peace Covenant
Today, God, where you lead me, I will follow.
