Daily Bread Oct. 10

Landscape Escape
By Shirley Remmenga of Fort Collins, CO, USA

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,…Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. —Jeremiah 29:4–5, 7, 11 NRSV

As I sat at my computer, I looked out my window and saw the delightful performance going on outside. The golden leaves of a tree were twirling, flying, and falling in a shower of gold. What a magnificent display of nature! What a wonderful “love note” from God for me and for anyone who was looking!

It was a time of knowing how blessed and privileged I was to be alive. God creates the possibility of the trees, and we plant them in our yards. We plant God in our hearts, and we share God’s love.

Every day, if I’m connected with the genuine Spirit of the Universe, I see these token love notes. They help keep me grateful, humble, and joyful.

Life is to be enjoyed; life is to be lived; life is to share.

Prayer for Peace

God of the universe, God of the heart, may we extend the love we feel for you in the moment by sharing it with another. May we share the peace of Christ.

Spiritual Practice: Trees

Watch the trees outside your window for a few moments. Close your eyes and meditate on Alma’s words about seeds and trees. If you were to plant and grow the Word of God in your heart, what tree might symbolically represent this process? Imagine a seed as it grows into a tree of life and blessing. Ask God to show you how to begin (see Alma 16:152–173).

Peace Covenant

Today, God, I will turn away from Windows®, and look out my window.
