Exercising Faith

These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace…. -Zechariah 8:16
I have severe chronic neuropathy which causes pain at various intensities. I usually control discomfort with regularly prescribed medications. One evening I became aware that the pain in my left foot was steadily increasing. By bedtime, the pain was almost unbearable.
I took my pain medication and went to bed, but the pain continued to worsen. I took another, stronger dose of medication and tried again to relax. Once more, the agony mounted to an unbearable level.
I woke my husband, Lynn, and asked him to administer to me. My faith journey is far from complete, and I have little confidence in prayer and administration, but my confidence in my husband and his faith is unwavering. So I asked.
He placed his hands on my head and offered an inspired prayer. When he finished, his hands moved to cup my cheeks. Gradually peace stole over my spirit, though pain continued in my foot.
He stood silent, with his hands on my face. The pain slowly began to fade. Still he stood there, then leaned down and kissed the top of my head. “Better?” he whispered.
“Yes.”
After he removed his hands, the discomfort decreased slowly, but noticeably. The entire experience seemed to be out of space and time. We went to bed, and within five minutes I was asleep. When I awoke the next morning, I had no pain of any kind.
Although I don’t know what I believe about the Holy Spirit, I believe that somehow God’s presence brought me peace, rest, and release from pain. Do I believe in miracles? I would tell you, “No.” But that night, as the pain faded, a miracle occurred. And I will always remember.
