Blest Be the Tie
Aleta Runkle (December 11, 1949)

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;  love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. -Romans 12:9-11

It happened in Colorado. A group of us on our way to Central City stopped at a little restaurant along the highway. We sat at a table by a picture window. A car drove up. As we watched the young men and women climb out, a girl in our group exclaimed, “Why, they’re from Graceland! See their T-shirts?” We rushed out to introduce ourselves, and soon discovered they knew someone who knew someone who knew us. We had such an “at home” feeling. It seemed as if we had known each other a long time.

That’s the way it is in the church. When we meet members of our fellowship in Canada, Maine, Alabama, or California, we feel a friendly closeness to them. We don’t have to explain ourselves to each other. Basically we have the same beliefs. There is an unspoken understanding between us. We can build on the friendship that already existed before we met because of our gospel ties.

I think the Master must have given a part of himself to each of us. That makes us spiritual relatives. Perhaps that’s why we experience this feeling of kinship of souls. Today as we thank God for our daily joys, it would be well to speak, also, of our appreciation for our world fellowship.

This month we are celebrating 70 years of Daily Bread. Each day we will be sharing Daily Bread stories from throughout the decades. You will notice that these stories reflect the language and theology of the time they were written. Our hope is that this act of sacred remembering will bless us with awareness of God’s movement throughout time and a renewed sense of God’s presence with us now!
