Embrace Diversity
By Judy Luffman of Redmond, OR, USA

Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit and you shall have peace in me. —Doctrine and Covenants 18:2n

Isn’t the diversity in nature amazing? Every time I hike through wooded areas in the northwestern USA or drive over the Cascade mountain range and see the blend of pine, fir, and deciduous trees, I bask in the beauty of God’s creation.

Have you ever paid attention to the different colors of green in leaves and needles? The gradient colors visible in the green spectrum are remarkable, and that is just one color! If the natural world is this extraordinary, how much more so is humankind?

We have been reminded through scripture that all are of worth and that unity in diversity is to be desired and attained in Community of Christ and in the world. Our culture seems to push us in a different direction, where divisions separate many of us. Those divisions might be founded on skin color, level of education or income, country of origin, ethnic names, places in society, or gender identity.

What will it take for us to fully embrace unity in diversity? Can we see each other through the eyes of God who proclaimed creation good?

Prayer Phrase

God is with us.

Invitation to Spiritual Practice

Holy Attention

Ordinary time is a season for awakening to God’s presence in all the details and circumstances of our everyday, ordinary lives. Wherever you are, pay attention to your surroundings. Allow yourself to be fully present for a time with whatever is before you. Where do you sense God with you right now exactly where you are?

How does today’s story invite you to discover God in the realities of your everyday life?
