Tiempo para Dios/Time for God
Karla Corina Mejxc3xada Castillo of San Pedro Sula, Honduras

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
    for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God? -Psalm 42:1-2

It was almost 7:00 p.m. I was about to clean the house and take down the Christmas decorations because the next day we would welcome a special visitor. At the same time my five-year-old nephew David said with enthusiasm, “Auntie, I want us to see a movie together!” My answer to him was that I had to wait because I had a lot to do. He offered to help me to make my work easier and more enjoyable. He worked hard in each task, almost until midnight. When we finally finished, I asked him, “What movie shall we see?” He replied with a beautiful smile on his face, “The one you want to see, Auntie!”

We are busy every day and we are so worried about completing our tasks that our time with those we love and with God suffers. We need more time alone in the presence of God, time to enjoy God’s presence and deepen our relationship with God. It does not matter so much how long we are in God’s presence, but it must be quality time in which we pour out our hearts and yearn for that Presence.

The attitude of my nephew David reminded me that God is with us. God is involved in our activities, is concerned that things turn out well. God waits for the moment when we enjoy God and present ourselves before God.

We may think of praying, reading the Bible, singing hymns of praise, or just admiring the creation. God leaves the choice to us and is pleased to see our need to seek God and find rest in God’s presence.

Prayer Phrase

“Attention is the beginning of devotion” (Mary Oliver).

Spiritual Practice

Holy Attention

Spend a few moments paying attention, wherever you are. Notice your surroundings. What draws your focus? Look more closely at detail and color. Notice what pulls or prods within you. How is the God-in-all-things speaking to you through what you see and feel right here, right now?
